Bible Online Learner was born to be adaptable. From the very beginning 8 years ago, Claus Tøndering and I wanted to develop a system that every Hebrew teacher in the world could use. The learner needs were in focus and the systems should offer an adaptable environment for learning in, with and from the ETCBC corpus. It should be possible for any teacher to use existing material and then supplement with Bible OL and create a custom-tailored 21st Century classroom.

In fact, the courses I built 2011-2013 were mostly for testing in the EuroPLOT project at the Fjellhaug International University College Denmark, the University of Gothenburg and especially for the Lutheran Graduate School of Theology in Fianaratsoa, Madagascar.

However, after the EU project I soon realized that we have to offer an online Hebrew course that is designed to exploit the full potential of Bible Online Learner and can be used by individual students who needs a fully developed online course for Hebrew. As I teach Hebrew at a Scandinavian bachelor education, I have developed a course that meets the requirements for our students.

I have now completed the first phase of this development project successfully in the Fall of 2016. The first goal was to have the learners in Copenhagen learn primarily through the exercises generated by Bible Online Learner and as a reward they would avoid a mid-term test of two hours which in previous classes has created many problems for the students. My leaners got the permission instead to produce documentation for havign done exercises for a total of 100 hours in Bible OL by October 13. From September 5 to October 13 I was able to follow their progress in Bible OL, and even in October see how their marks deteriorated because they in the end had to meet the 100 hour deadline instead on focusing on correct answers.

Until this point in the course, the learning outcomes looked very promising. However, the final exams were not as shiny. We do not have sufficient data to explain this deterioration, but we assume that the reason is that most of the students discontinued practicing, because it was no longer a requirement for the course any more. Fortunately, most passed the final exam, and at least one third with flying colours. I will however have to focus on how to improve the learning outcomes, and Judith Gottschalk will be working on enhancements of the Learning Journey module, which may help the teacher to facilitate the learning processes even better.

During the Fall of 2016 I have continuously built new material and tests for my students and improved on material in response to feedback from active learners. I now have hundreds of tests covering 30 pages of Hebrew text or 5-600 hours of student work. You can read more about the material at the BH Moodle site (=http://bh.3bmoodle.dk). Here I offer the first 70 hours of work completely for free in the 3BH part 1 course (read more HERE - login in as a guest). Part 2 of this course is basically developed in the first version, while the final part will be developed anew during 2017 and be available for students from August 2017.

For all of 2017, I offer online access to this material for distance learners. Everybody can start on the free material right away.

On certain condition I am also willing to enroll learners for part 2 and 3, but I cannot offer much instruction for free. Our college does not have any support from the Danish start and our students do not get the lavish Danish stipends that normal citizens have, so our college has to fight for every penny from donors and users. But we want to serve and we can discuss terms - the poorer you are the less you pay.

I may also be able to enroll students who do not speak a Scandinavian language, but I cannot guarantee this, because our college is not permitted to enroll learners who do not speak Scandinavian for exams. I will however explore ways to offer a validated certification through another university where this option would be affordable for students, possibly through the VU University in Amsterdam, where I have a position as affiliated researcher. But universities often ask a high sum for students' certificate, sometimes cheap or free for EU citizens and then more expensive for the poorest in Africa and Asia - this world is a place where the less you earn, the more you pay, it seems.

Do contact me off-list, if you are interested in more information on participation in this course.
